Another small town along the Inside Passage is Ketchikan. It’s situated in the Togass Narrows on the southwest coast of Revillagigedo Island, and has a population of around 15,000. This is an extremely busy town in the summertime, with 5+ cruise ships docking on any given day. We saw more seaplanes here than anywhere else, and their airport is even on it’s own island, which means water taxis wait at the gate instead of yellow cabs. So their waterway is quite busy!

Ketchikan is home to many Bald Eagles, which we saw from a great vantage point from our morning Kayak trip. These birds are huge: 7 foot wing span and 3-4 feet tall. We usually saw one nesting on each of the smaller islands we kayaked by – or about 1 mile in between each nest.

Here you’ll also find one of the world’s largest collection of Totem Poles, where the current rate today costs upwards of $3,000 per foot! There are parks such as Totem Bight State Historical Park, which have a concentration of Totems, but you’ll also see scattered one’s throughout the town from land, sea and air.
